Does a Rotten Apple Spoil the Rest? Crime and Social Interaction in Argentina

چکیده
Violence shows strong disparities between regions and time. The most obvious explanation for such disparities is that both economic and social conditions change over regions and time. However, it is found that less than 50% of the variance of crime is explained by economic and deterrence variables. One of the possible explanations for such puzzle may be the existence of social interaction across agents. If such interaction exists then it can be argued that it plays a role in explaining higher variance in crime rates unexplained by urban/economic characteristics. Using a database for 390 counties in Argentina we find evidence of social interaction for robberies, but such interaction is negligible for more serious crimes (homicide and rape).
